At several points during a child’s time at Saint Lawrence School they will be involved in more formal assessment procedures. For our younger pupils we aim to ensure that the children see this as part of their normal classroom work. If the children tell you that they have not taken any tests, then in many ways we have met our aims! As the children move through Key Stage Two, they start to take tests at set times in Reading, Writing and Mathematics. The results of these tests are passed on to parents through the child’s report in the summer term each year.
As the children reach the end of their time at Saint Lawrence School, the testing system becomes more formal resulting in tests taken under exam conditions in Year 6. The dates for these tests are set for the school, the papers have to be kept secure both before and after the tests and the papers are marked externally. In ALL of these tests it is not a matter of children passing or failing, but measuring each child’s current level of performance against other children of the same age. The tests are in reading, writing and mathematics.
The best help is through the interest that is taken in the child's learning and progress and the support that is given with homework. While there is an emphasis on children (and schools) doing their best, an over-emphasis can result in children who feel under pressure. Sensible things like early nights and a good breakfast make an effective start to any day but are particularly helpful during testing time. Parents should please AVOID HOLIDAYS during this time.
With the younger pupils testing takes place over a period of time between April and May. Our oldest pupils take most of their tests in the first two to three weeks of May.
In 2011 - 2012 the Year 6 Testing is 8th - 11th May
